Short circuit at your home – how to look for problems
Every property, commercial or residential, has electrical devices and equipment that need to be connected to a power source, and therefore electrical wiring and other installations are part of that system. The flow of electricity through these systems is controlled by circuit breakers. However, there are many problems caused by overloading. Short circuit is one such problem that can cause a lot of damage and can also lead to a fire if not fixed in time.
How to identify the cause of a short circuit
There are times when a short circuit occurs in electrical appliances that are plugged into highly visible outlets. However, this can also occur with concealed wiring, which is a bigger problem because it is not visible. If you want to be able to identify the cause of the short circuit, it’s important to know what steps to follow; check out these steps:
Is there an electrical short? If so, the circuit breaker will trip and stop the flow of electricity. The first thing you need to do is locate where the main breaker panel is located – generally you will find it in your basement, garage or utility room. Once you’ve located it, simply open its main cover, but don’t really try to touch anything yet – you might get an electric shock.
Now determine which of the switches has tripped – the one you should be looking for is the one that is in the “down” position. Once you’ve figured that out, figure out which circuit that breaker is connected to. Next, you just need to unplug all the electrical devices in that room. Reset that particular circuit breaker and confirm if this issue has been resolved.
Do you find that the breaker trips again? This simply means that the short circuit is in the walls. On the other hand, if it does not trip, it means that a device or equipment is the culprit. The key to finding the fault, is to plug in each appliance in turn and turn on the power. If the breaker trips, it means that it is the problematic device.
