Signs that something may be wrong with the electrical wiring in your home

Frequent tripping

The job of circuit breakers is to protect your electrical system by shutting off power at the first sign of danger. They do this by measuring the amount of current flowing through the wiring system, and if an irregularity occurs and/or they trip, the power is shut off immediately. If this happens once or twice, there is no need to worry, as there is always the possibility of a power surge. However, if this happens a little too frequently, there is a serious problem with your wiring system.

Frequent tripping doesn’t just mean a problem with the wiring, though. There could also be a problem with the circuit breaker itself. Your circuit breaker could be defective or have reached the end of its life, requiring replacement.

Flickering lights

If one or more of your light bulbs start flickering, it’s a clear sign of a fault in your wiring. The reason could be that the bulbs are overloading your circuit, and your wiring isn’t handling the load well.

This usually happens when you install lamps that require a bit more power than your power grid can handle. In this case, you either need to upgrade your power grid or remove the lamps that are causing the problem.

Foul smell

If your electrical wiring is giving off a foul odor, it’s a possible sign that your electrical wiring is burned out. The likelihood of a hidden electrical fire somewhere in the wiring is also high. In this case, you need to act immediately and call the electrician.

Shocks in sockets

If there are sockets in your home that cause vibrations when plugged in, it probably means that your wiring has a short circuit. You need to call a professional to check and repair the outlet. Remember that not using the outlet is not the solution. If you let the problem sit, it will grow into a bigger problem.

Charred switches

Charred switches are another sign that your electrical wiring has a problem. In this case, you not only need a repair in your wiring, but you also need to have the outlet replaced. If the outlet is charred, it is better to replace it altogether, even if it is still working properly.
